my story

Catherine Kurth is a sommelier and amateur printer based in Detroit, Mich. 

These days, she can be found dancing around the dining room floor of a
restaurant downtown, playing matchmaker between her guests and the 500+ bottle list. 

In her spare time, she studies letterpress printing and linoleum block carving.

an ambassadress for the fruits of the vine

I've been encompassed by restaurants and the city of Detroit for the majority of my life. Both elements are intrinsically entwined for me and have allowed for adventures great and small. I've travelled to five countries and across the United States because of my work in restaurants, in wine. The resonance of an industrial midwestern city and our attitude of "we'll figure it out" has given me the strength to explore and be challenged by the world, facing it with a hungry excitement to learn more, to see more, to do more, and to bring all that I can back for my people to enjoy as well.

My work, currently

For me, wine is a totem. It symbolizes the very fabric of so much that makes us human. I feel such good fortune at being able to weave together the contents of a good bottle of wine with the people who made it and the place it comes from to the person in front of me as we stand miles, and often years away from the harvest of those grapes.
There is memory held in the consumption of wine. Memory of connection or commiseration. Memory of a meal shared in good company, of milestones being honored, or traditions forged. Wine brings together generations, cultural exchange and all the other idiosyncratic experiences of this very human life we share.

  • Can execute staff education for all levels of knowledge, from the basics to deep dives on regions important to the business. Also available to do guided in-home tastings that focus on a region or style of interest.
